A common spot to be in: a mid-life aluminum frame, a groupset that still shifts fine, and a choice between two upgrades that cost about the same, a carbon frame or a second wheelset. For climbing specifically, the wheelset usually wins. A frame swap changes ride quality and looks; a lighter wheelset changes the one number that shows up on every climb, and it bolts straight onto the bike you already have.
This is not true for every kind of riding. On flat, fast group rides, aero shape does more than weight, and a heavier aero wheel can be the faster choice there. On a climb, weight at the rim is what you feel, because you are accelerating and decelerating it with every pedal stroke on top of just carrying it uphill.
Whole-bike weight matters more than any single part, but a wheelset is one of the few upgrades that removes weight at the rim, the part of the bike doing the most work on a climb. Stock aluminum wheelsets on a mid-range factory build typically run somewhere in the 1,700 to 1,900 gram range per pair. A used lightweight aluminum or shallow carbon wheelset can come in several hundred grams under that, a bigger single-part weight cut than most riders will find anywhere else on the bike short of the frame itself.
Rim width and depth matter almost as much as the number on the box. A narrow, shallow rim sheds weight but gives up some stability in crosswinds and some tire volume. Aluminum is the honest budget play. It is heavier than carbon at the same rim depth, but the weight gap between a light aluminum wheelset and an entry carbon one is smaller than people expect, often 100 to 200 grams a pair, for a fraction of the price. Aluminum also does not carry carbon's structural failure mode: a hard impact usually just dents an aluminum rim rather than cracking it invisibly.
Carbon is the real weight cut once budget allows for it, particularly in a shallow, climbing-oriented profile rather than a deep aero one. The tradeoff is price and resale risk: a carbon rim can crack from an impact that would only dent aluminum, and that damage is not always visible in a listing photo.

Rim brake or disc brake, since the two are not interchangeable and this is the single most common mismatch buyers make on a used wheelset. Rim width in millimeters if it is stated, since a narrow rim on a newer wide-tire frame can rub.
Hub brand and freehub body matter too, and they are easy to miss when the listing photos focus on the rim. A wheelset that is otherwise a good deal is a bad buy if the freehub does not match your cassette and the body cannot be swapped for a reasonable cost. Does rim width matter for a climbing wheelset? Yes, though less than total weight. A narrower rim is usually lighter and slightly more aerodynamic head-on, but modern wider tires need enough internal rim width to seat properly. Check your frame's tire clearance and the rim's internal width before assuming narrower always wins.
Can I put a climbing wheelset on any road bike? Only if the brake type matches, rim or disc, and the freehub body matches your cassette. Those two checks eliminate most of the wheelsets that look right in a listing but will not actually bolt onto your bike.
